Policy statement: ETS, Renewable Energy Supports and Energy System Decarbonisation

With the EU ITRE and ENVI Committees due to vote next month on proposals to reform the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) and Effort Sharing Regulation, EAI is issuing a Policy Statement on this and other related matters to relevant MEPs.

The overarching aim of EAI, in support of domestic and EU policy, is the economy-wide
decarbonisation of the energy system:

  • EAI endorses full delivery of the 2020 target of a 40% contribution from RES-E.
  • Maintaining at least a 40% RES-E penetration level after 2020.
  • Growth in the market share of electricity in the Heating and Transport sectors.
  • Strengthening of the ETS to provide improved operational efficiency and a more robust
    investment signal.
