SONI (System Operator for Northern Ireland) recently published its Draft Strategy for 2025-2031, outlining a transformative vision for Northern Ireland’s energy future. Aimed at meeting ambitious renewable targets – such as achieving 80% renewable energy by 2030 – the strategy focuses on four key pillars: Advise, Plan, Deliver, and Operate. Each pillar addresses Northern Ireland’s complex energy needs, encompassing a data-led advisory role, proactive and streamlined planning system, accelerated delivery of critical infrastructure, and safe, reliable operations to support the transition to a decarbonised power system.
The EAI’s response to the consultation welcomed SONI’s commitment to an inclusive, whole-system approach that involves early engagement with industry, regulatory, and statutory stakeholders. We emphasised the importance of transparent planning and recommended that SONI develop a comprehensive workplan with clearly define milestones and timelines. This approach will help align resources and track progress across initiatives essential for grid modernisation and system resilience.
We also supported SONI’s ambition to act as an independent advisor, suggesting further enhancements in data-sharing practices to facilitate evidence-based policymaking, particularly concerning cross-border and EU integration. Additionally, we encouraged SONI to prioritise projects that maximise renewable integration, reduce emissions, and bolster security of supply. Collaborative efforts in these areas will be critical in achieving Northern Ireland’s climate goals and ensuring an affordable, secure energy future.
Through our feedback, we hope to contribute to a strategy that not only supports SONI’s objectives but also strengthens the broader energy ecosystem in Northern Ireland, fostering a balanced, sustainable path to decarbonisation.
